On a carnivore diet, the focus is entirely on animal-based products, with no plant-based foods allowed. Unlike keto, carnivore is even more restrictive. Here’s a guide on what to avoid to stay on track.

Grains and Grain Products

Avoid all grains, including rice, pasta, cereal, oatmeal, and wheat flour, as they are strictly plant-based and high in carbohydrates. There are no direct carnivore substitutes for grains; instead, rely on animal fats and proteins to feel satiated.

Vegetables and Legumes

All vegetables (even low-carb ones) and legumes like peas, potatoes, lentils, and beans are excluded on the carnivore diet due to their plant origin and carb content. Stick to nutrient-dense meats and organ meats to meet your nutritional needs.

Fruits and Juices

Fruits, even low-carb options like berries, are not part of the carnivore diet, as they contain plant sugars and fiber. For a source of micronutrients and vitamins, incorporate organ meats like liver instead of fruit.

Chips, Crackers, and Snack Foods

Snack foods such as chips, crackers, and grain-based or vegetable-based crisps are off-limits. Instead, consider having homemade pork rinds or cheese crisps for a carnivore-friendly snack.

Dairy with Additives or Sweeteners

Sweetened or flavored dairy products, like certain yogurts, are not carnivore-friendly due to added sugars. Stick to plain, high-fat options such as heavy cream, unsweetened Greek yogurt (if tolerated), or cheese.

Baked Goods and Sugary Snacks

Baked items like bread, muffins, cookies, and chocolate treats are not allowed. These are usually grain-based or high in carbs. For a high-fat snack, consider meat-based options, such as fatty cuts of beef or pork.

Sugars and Sweeteners

Any form of sugar or alternative sweetener, including syrups and artificial sweeteners, is discouraged on the carnivore diet as it encourages sugar cravings. Stick to the natural flavors found in animal-based foods.

Sauces and Condiments

Most sauces and condiments, like ketchup, BBQ sauce, and honey mustard, are plant-based and high in added sugars. Use simple, carnivore-friendly seasonings, such as salt, pepper, and animal fats like butter or tallow, to add flavor.
